Sidesperson Duties

Typical duties:

A) ARRIVAL

  1. About 30 minutes before the service ask Rector about any special instructions.

  2. Turn on lights and sound system (service is to be heard in Narthex also).

B) BOOKS

  1. Organize hymnal and BAS books according to leaflet information and hand out with leaflets to parishioners.

  2. Ensure large print copies of service and any other available large print material are available.

  3.  Put the Guest Book out on the lectern in the Narthex.

  4. After the service replace the books, etc. as parishioners leave. Hymnals and books remain as left on chairs in sanctuary.

C) COUNT

  1. Total number of persons attending service including all children, Rector, liturgical assistant, others at the front of the church, in the choir, yourself and partner.

  2. Record this number in the vestry after the service.

D) DOORS

  1. Keep the chapel doors closed unless required seating is needed

E) GREETING

  1. Usher those in need and new people.

  2. Hand out service materials to all parishioners with warm welcome.

F) OFFERTORY

  1. Give choir their collection pouch and ensure collection baskets are in alcove.

  2. During the offertory hymn pick up the collection starting while the sacraments are beeing prepared at the altar. Retrieve the choir pouch.

  3. Present the baskets and pouch to the altar before the hymn ends.

G) COMMUNION

  1. Follow choir lead and usher/help parishioners to the altar.

  2. Sidespersons usually receive communion last.

H) AFTER SERVICE ENDS

  1. Turn off sound system and lights.

  2. Tidy around all seats.

  3. Record the count in the vestry register.

  4. Remaining leaflets are left on the desk in church office.

  5. Stuff a few complete leaflets in the Narthex outside Rector’s door.

  6. Secure the collection if the counters do not appear right away. The weekly listing of parishioners who are counters is in the Sacristy.

  7. Ensure all doors to building are locked or delegate this to parishioner.

Remember our main responsibility is to make everyone feel as welcome and as comfortable as possible. If you are unable to attend the service please find someone to substitute for you. Relax and enjoy the service.
