Jazz Vespers on September 15th @ 7PMFeaturing Edie DaPonte and Attila Fias Edie Daponte is an award-winning music artist who brings passion, playfulness and an evident love of performance to her live shows. Edie has established a reputation in the music scene of Vancouver Island and Western Canada as a dynamic and engaging performer. A regular performer in both her hometown of Sidney - as the house singer for the Beacon Landing - and jazz clubs in Victoria. Edie has also performed at festivals including the Victoria International Jazz Festival and Vancouver Latin Festival. Her powerful but silky-smooth voice lends itself perfectly to a range of jazz standards and cabaret numbers. You can feel Edie’s love of music and rhythm as she moves seamlessly from bossa nova to jazz and back again, switching between Portuguese, Spanish and French language numbers effortlessly. Attila Fias is an award-winning, Hungarian born jazz pianist, composer, arranger and producer raised in Toronto. His special blend of sounds from across the globe reflects his rich and varied musical background with influences from Canada, Hungary, Brazil, Cuba and India. He has performed in major concert arenas such as Madison Square Garden Theater, Singapore Indoor Stadium, Los Angeles Convention Center, Bangalore Palace Grounds, Wembley Stadium, Sydney Super Dome, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, as well as many smaller international venues. Church of the Advent is so pleased to be welcoming these two impressive performers to our Jazz Vespers stage. Please join us for a rare opportunity to enjoy an evening of such high caliber jazz musicians in the Westshore. |

Every voice is important, no matter your age, no matter how long you’ve been in the parish. We’ll be working in small groups to ensure that everyone gets a chance to speak. Each session begins with a potluck lunch at 12 noon, and end at 4 PM. SIGN UP SHEETS ARE IN THE NARTHEX! |

"Secret Shoppers" needed!
What is a "secret shopper" and why do we need some? The idea of a "secret shopper" comes from business, where people are sent into a store to evaluate aspects of how that store is run. They are not identified as information gatherers from head office, so they look like an ordinary shopper - but have a secret mission. Secret shoppers are really helpful in gathering information in order to improve practice - whether it's a Best Buy, a Timmies or a parish. What would you do? We are looking for people to volunteer to visit one church of similar size as the Church of the Advent in the Greater Victoria area during September, October and November. You should not know anyone at this church. You will be an ordinary once-off visitor - and not identify yourself as a secret shopper (duh). You would tell no-one that this is what you are doing. It is better to visit a denominational church, such as the United Church, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, or other Anglican church, because they are similar in practice and budget to Church of the Advent. You would be given a form to fill in that would cover aspects of the appearance of the church, how you are welcomed, what the parish bulletin boards, bulletins, and sources of information look like, how you are treated at coffee hour, etc. Why are we doing this? It's always good to compare our practice with that of similar churches, so that we can improve, keep fresh and up-to-date, and to make sure that we are doing things as well as we possibly can. It is easy for us to get stuck in the ways we have always done things. This is an opportunity to assess our systems and improve. And: If you have friends who would like to visit Church of the Advent anonymously and fill out the form for us, that would be very helpful indeed. Interested?: Please email Sr. Ingrid at iandersen@bc.anglican.ca with the name of the church you would like to visit. |
Christmas Craft Fair 2024
The Christmas Craft Fair committee will be collecting items between now and the time of the Craft Fair in November. They are needing Christmas mugs and small canning jars for jams and jellies. There is a bin in the Narthex where you can drop off the items. Any other questions can be directed to Liz Garland. Thank you! |
Church of the Advent Nametags Available!
Our parish is growing rapidly, and it's important for visitors and new parishioners to get to know names. The Church of the Advent nametags are made of a light brass, laser engraved with a magnetic backing so that it will not damage your Sunday finery. The cost is dependent on the number ordered. We usually order in batches of 12 or more. If you are interested, or would like more information, please see Mike Armstrong after church or email spike39@shaw.ca with ‘Nametag’ in the subject line. |
